How it all happened
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
A participant from JBFA at the UN Committee Against Torture held 5/21-5/22 witnessed an outrageous remark coming from a Japanese delegate.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
The delegate in question is H.E. Amb. Hideaki Ueda, Ambassador in charge of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs http://t.co/1msldsiIag

The JFBA participant reports in his blog that Mauritian delegate criticized Japan's criminal justice system as being "medieval".
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
Amb. Ueda rebutted saying that Japan is THE most advanced country on human rights in the world. He realized his error and quickly corrected.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
Amb. Ueda then said, "Japan is ONE of the most advanced country on human rights." There was some sniggering on the floor. Then he exploded.
  • His exact words, according to informal records: "Japan was not in the Middle Ages but one of the most advanced countries in this field."
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
Amb. Ueda said (or screamed), "Why do you laugh? Stop laughing! Shut up!". Then a moment of dead silence fell on the floor, at the UN.

Eventually, the Chairman managed to skillfully calm the situation and proceed. But the fact is that our delegate made a scene at the UN.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
The Mauritian delegate's point was well made, and objective.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
The criticism of Japan's criminal justice system was attributed to the closed investigation procedures without the presence of an attorney.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
Explanations were made by Japan's delegation on their reasons but to the former judge of Mauritius their explanations were insufficient.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
The judge pointed out that ratio of cases convicted vs. acquitted in Japan was 100:1 and he suspected an over-reliance on confessions.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
The judge at this point remarked, "These are medieval-style system. Japan should leap out of it and adjust itself to a global standard"
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
It was after this remark when the Japanese Ambassador snapped.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
Now you tell us .Who acted out in an outrageous manner in this situation? The answer is quite obvious. The Japanese side.
Takahiro.K💫 @tkatsumi_e
We know. They know. This "Ambassador in charge of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs " is ill-fit for the job, for obvious reasons.
