Friends of the Earth 🌍 @friends_earth
Thanks to all the great speakers at the High Court rally this morning. Please give a RT of support to our amazing legal team as they swing into action to make the case against #Heathrow expansion on #climatechange grounds 🙌 #NoThirdRunway pic.twitter.com/JwlgvOxyP4

Barrister at the Heathrow legal challenges case telling the judges that at the time the Airports NPS was designated, in June 2018, the government had no policy on aviation carbon. That might come later in 2019. Certainly no policy or ideas on limiting air travel demand
Isabella Kaminski @Isabella_Kam
.@friends_earth lawyer says existing climate change policies recognise that they are only a start and that targets will probably need to be tightened. Says they "do not in any way say sit back" #Heathrowairport #NoThirdRunway #ClimateJustice
Laura MacKenzie @elderflower79
Court hears that Govt had drafts of IPCC 1.5 report early 2018 – long b4 designated NPS, never mind fact that UK ratified Paris climate agreement in 2016! Bigger Heathrow opposite of “help[ing] to accelerate global action on climate change“ gov.uk/government/new… #NoThirdRunway
Laura MacKenzie @elderflower79
Now we’re onto ground 2 of high court climate challenge to #Heathrow expansion - clear duty on SofS to contribute to sustainable development and in particular the desirability of mitigating climate change - under section 10 of the Planning Act... #NoThirdRunway
Isabella Kaminski @Isabella_Kam
.@PlanB_earth up now: Tim Crosland arguing that the Paris Agreement's aim of keeping global warming to 1.5°C has been the "lynchpin of government and international policy" since December 2015, so the government was bound to take it into account #NoThirdRunway
AEF @The_AEF
Having heard the climate change arguments against Heathrow expansion from @friends_earth, the court is now hearing from @PlanB_earth’s Tim Crosland on why a new runway isn’t compatible with the Paris Agreement.
Laura MacKenzie @elderflower79
Ignoring non-CO2 impacts of aviation on climate is just one reason why Grayling failed under s10 sd/climate mitigation duty: as @CarbonBrief explain, an “ominous hole in the efforts to tackle flight emissions... all but completely neglected”carbonbrief.org/explainer-chal… #NoThirdRunway
AirportWatch @AirportWatch
Tim Crosland talking in the Heathrow hearing about the importance of consistency between government departments, in their treatment of international agreements like Paris. We cannot have a department working on the basis of the Paris Agreement, and the DfT saying it's irrelevant
AirportWatch @AirportWatch
Many examples from documents by the DfT on Heathrow, since the 2017 Paris Agreement, that use the old discredited 2C global temperature rise limit. There are also documents to indicate ignoring the Paris 1.5C limit has been intentional (not accidental) in relation to Heathrow
AirportWatch @AirportWatch
Tim Crosland saying Mayor of London, Clare Perry, the EU etc etc have put out statements on their ambition to work towards net zero before 2050 for UK, London, EU. How can Grayling have been so out of touch on this? How did he not bother to get proper advice on aviation's CO2?
Isabella Kaminski @Isabella_Kam
This is important - many other #ClimateJustice cases have shied away from claiming that Paris Agreement has direct effect in national law twitter.com/elderflower79/…
Isabella Kaminski @Isabella_Kam
.@PlanB_earth now onto claim that decision on #Heathrow airport was irrational, because PM and other ministers have called Paris Agreement a "landmark" and Foreign Office is working to help other countries implement its temperature limits #NoThirdRunway
AirportWatch @AirportWatch
Tim Crosland. Plan B. At least with the NPS & the immense CO2 emissions implications, Grayling should have brought the issue to the attention of Parliament before a vote on the 3td runway. He did not. [So many MPs voted for the NPS without the information they would have needed]
Plan B Earth @PlanB_earth
Thank you to everyone that showed up in solidarity our event today, and to those who joined us in court as well 🎉 Our journey to #nothirdrunway is not over until all our voices are heard. Our future is not "irrelevant" 👊 Picture Credits: @IHadjicosta pic.twitter.com/rzbqORfc3w

Transcripts of Heathrow legal challenges (Heathrow Claimants -v- The Secretary of State for Transport) at judiciary.uk/publications/h… There are now 3. Today's 13th March was on climate change, with evidence from David Wolfe QC for Friends of the Earth, + Tim Crosland of Plan B Earth

Report of #NoThirdRunway case in court y'day: “adding a third runway will jeopardise the UK’s ability to make the very deep reductions in ghgs necessary to prevent global warming from causing catastrophic, irreversible impacts for people and ecosystems,” gu.com/p/bxmtp/stw
