Tonight we are discussing changes to #autism dx in #dsm5. what are the pros of these changes? #esped5013
@saffin12
First the pros and cons depend on what article you're reading #Esped5013
Nancy @NCummo
I read that it will help adults with ASD to access for Medicaid #esped5013
paula fran duggins @foodpuzzler
#esped5013 it can be said that #aspergers is just a milder form of #asd, and placing it in the same category gives a fuller pic of #asd.
Jacq87 @Jacq87
pros of narrowing diagnosis= less misdiagnosis (of children who may only have dev. delay, and not "autism" #ESPED5013
@saffin12
There'll be a more concise way of diagnosing children with autism #Esped5013
Sandi McNiff @Drappelfed143
It gives clinicians a guide to use when submitting diagnosis. #esped5013
susan kubik @slkubik
Pro - control the over diagnosis add is getting like adhd #esped5013
Sandi McNiff @Drappelfed143
It specifies levels in the diagnosis as well #esped5013
Rhodora Shinners @RhodoraRhodora
It's a guide to help diagnose and get the proper services. #esped5013
Sara Saba @saraesaba
I like that it combines Aspergers into Autism instead of spreading it into a "desirable" disability and a "undesirable" dis #esped5013
Lisa McCrea @dominick526
@Jacq87 @dominick526 #esped5013 children will be able to recieve services that are needed for specfic diadnose.
Marcia @mbruseo
#Esped5013 Pro- allows for a more "individualized" dx via levels of severity
JHollenbeck @jenmichol
#esped5013 diagnosis will need to deeply investigated. There may be fewer Diagnosis but maybe more accurate.
Ann-Marie Pollock @AMPollockOT
includes social communication D/O for those without rep behavs #esped5013
Nancy @NCummo
it may help to provide proper supports and levels of support #esped5013
Sandi McNiff @Drappelfed143
@dominick526 I was thinking it could cause some not to recieve services at all. #esped5013
susan kubik @slkubik
I think it may help Drs. make more accurate diagnosis #esped5013
Prof. Keefe @ProfKeefe
do #labels matter? how will the new labels help us to get better #asd diagnoses than in #dsmIV? #esped5013
Nancy @NCummo
unfortunately I think sometimes labels do matter in the school system #esped5013
Sandi McNiff @Drappelfed143
I am not so sure I am fond of the cobining of Aspergers in to Autism only because it seem some kids may not get diagnosed at all. #esped5013
@saffin12
However there is a fear of children with PDD or sensory integration disorder left out of the autism spectrum #Esped5013
