Delighted to be at #nuim #MFLAlive2018 listening to @spsmith45 🤗👍🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷
Susan Leahy @susanleahy
We are all being reassured by @spsmith45that there isn’t just ONE way to teach a language. We are in a “post” methods era, where we take the best bits from previous methods. What method do you lean towards? #mflalive #edchatie #MFLAlive2018

We are recommended by @spsmith45 to check out LG Kelly: 25 centuries of Language Teaching. #MFLAlive2018

If you’re tweeting from #MFLAlive2018 try to share your ideas and reactions to and interpretations of what the speakers say. It makes for a really interesting thread for those who can’t be here. 😊

“Practise!” This is a cornerstone of the approach of @spsmith45and @gianfrancocont9 in their book The Language Teacher’s Toolkit. Also, Recycle, and Balance Skills. #MFLAlive2018
Susan Leahy @susanleahy
Research shows that there are natural orders of language ie students will learn new structures when they are ready. How does that affect our practice day to day in the classroom? #MFLAlive2018
Susan Leahy @susanleahy
Phew! There IS support for some explicit teaching and practising grammar. But obviously we want people to achieve proficiency in speaking and listening in a language. #MFLAlive2018
Maria Harney @mariaharney
@spsmith45 what type of language teacher are you? Inspiring and thought provoking #MFLAlive2018 #nuim @AnneGrills pic.twitter.com/e25CkSe6hZ

Which are you? asks @spsmith45 An “inputter” or a “skill-builder”? The former mirrors more how a child learns their mother tongue, the latter on giving explicit instruction. #MFLAlive2018
Susan Leahy @susanleahy
Think about it, says @spsmith45 A child learning listens, listens, listens and then when ready, produces language. But very often in a language classroom, we teach as if we were teaching piano: skills, foundations, building-blocks and then work your way up. #MFLAlive2018
Susan Leahy @susanleahy
Vast majority of the room feels like a “skill-builder”! #MFLAlive2018

Steve Smith asks MFL teachers #MFLAlive2018 'Are you an inputter or skill-builder?" The answer in the room today has been overwhemlingly on one side. Can you guess which one? Right or left? @PDST_MFL @languages_ie @OVFLanguages @atsirlanda @ICDublin pic.twitter.com/RXoPBmtSis

Reflecting on MFL practice @PDST_MFL how are we teaching Input or Skillbuilding? The debate continues! #MFLAlive2018 pic.twitter.com/b4Ak5ruTi3

Drinking every word of Steve Smith's presentation on input/output teaching. Which type are you? #MFLAlive2018
Susan Leahy @susanleahy
Input-output tasks include information gap task, general unscripted conversation, teacher-led oral drill and question-answer, playing Alibi. Everyone loves the sound of Alibi! More details on blog of @spsmith45 Get them to swear on the dictionary 😂 #MFLAlive2018
