#edchatie probably won't be able to make the chat tonight but @pammoran gives two examples of deep learning rising out of student passion projects shiftyourparadigm.org/episode-028-al…

Fred Boss, 2nd level art teacher, currently with @NCCAie Looking forward to tonight's #edchatie discussion on "Deep learning; is it possible at post-primary level?"
Aishling Donohoe @AshDonohoe
#edchatie Hi, Ashling here. PP Maths and Biology teacher. Interesting topic tonight!
fboss @fboss
I'm interested to know what we mean by "Deep Learning"? Anyone for T-shaped learning? power2improve.com/en/special-pro… #edchatie
Conor Power @conpower
#edchatie Conor, second level. I think it's possible but we need to take a cross sectoral approach from primary onwards.
Sinéad Tuohy @GoStressbusterz
Sinéad, seconded post-primary teacher in Tipperary-parent of a current 5th year student so interested from both perspectives #edchatie
Aishling Donohoe @AshDonohoe
#edchatie my initial response to this question is 'no'. I feel with the size of the cureiculum (speaking personally about Maths/Biology) and time constraints to teach it, there is little opportunity for deep learning unfortunately.
Aishling Donohoe @AshDonohoe
I suppose I say this in terms of learning content, however I feel in Maths especially there is much to be learned in terms of problem-solving skills. #edchatie
Conor Power @conpower
@AshDonohoe #edchatie that's why it needs to form part of the conversion on #lcreform. I know from taking to colleagues at third level many students who did a good leaving struggle to learn autonomously.
fboss @fboss
@AshDonohoe I agree - but am wondering if the skills & approaches of problem-solving are such that they can be learned through all subjects and so can be used to deepen learning in all subjects? #edchatie
John Heffernan @johnmayo
@AshDonohoe @pamelaaobrien #edchatie does not always have to be on instructional time. Every student should have an educational opus.
Karen Murnane @CiarraiKM
Hi, Karen here, primary teacher...initial response is “no” as curriculum is so overloaded... #edchatie
Pam @pamelaaobrien
Pam, Maths and Comp Science lecturer in Tipperary. Sorry I'm late to #edchatie
Conor Power @conpower
I imagine it would need a cross curricular approach. You will get students tell you 'just give us the notes that's what the other teachers do' #edchatie twitter.com/fboss/status/9…
fboss @fboss
@pamelaaobrien Never too late for an #edchatie discussion. Tonight we're talking about "Deep learning; is it possible at post-primary level?"
