Let's get started with tonight's #edchatie by saying what we mean by "Should the Teaching Council adjust their requirements for people wanting to teach in order to accommodate for subjects that are hard to recruit for?"

I know the @TeachingCouncil Curricular Subject Requirements (PostPrimary) document is available here: teachingcouncil.ie/en/Publication… #edchatie
S H @shffnn
#edchatie The Department of Education would do well to give universities funding to set up Teaching Diplomas in subjects where there are shortages of teachers, just like they did with Spanish, German and Italian in the early 1990s.
S H @shffnn
#edchatie My own favourite encounter with the T*ch*ng C*nc*l was the time that I had to get an old lecturer of mine to write a letter to say I had good enough German to teach at second level. I have a first class honours degree and have spent more than a year of my life there.

@shffnn #edchatie agree with this. However need to be mindful of cost due to lower salaries and lack of FT contracts, may make it financially inaccessible.
fboss @fboss
Which are the subjects where there are shortages in Post Primary schools? #edchatie
Laurence Cuffe @CuffeL
I know that on the forms there is very little scope for potential teachers to list relevant experience. #edchatie
Laurence Cuffe @CuffeL
#edchatie Dont think I could teach chemistry with them, despite Ph.D. and these publications scholar.google.com/citations?user… #edchatie
Sandra Ní Dhubhda @dhubhda
#edchatie Find it incomprehensible that only can train in St Angela's to do Home Ec and that there is no facility to do it as an additional subject.
Conor Power @conpower
#EdchatIE of course when you are in the door of the school you can teach anything.
