I am grateful to every Muslim woman who has shared her own experience with sexual harassment and assault at Hajj. Together we will make it better for our sisters pic.twitter.com/dPrjOlnCUy #MosqueMeToo

I was sexually harassed in Masjidil Haram, Mecca, once. In Medina, twice. I was so embarassed although those horrible incidents were not my fault. I told my parents about incidents in Medina right away, but not about the one in Mecca. #MosqueMeToo

It took years before I could tell my parents about the incidents in Mecca. Perhaps because I was so apalled that such thing could happen in Masjidil Haram, the holiest of mosques in the holiest city, when I was circumumbulating the holy Kaabah. #MosqueMeToo

I was walking around the Kaabah in tawaf when a tall, bearded, Arab man grabbed my right breast from behind. I glanced back at his face. His eyes were looking to other direction. I tried to walk faster but it was very difficult in the crowd. Then he disappeared. #MosqueMeToo

I was embarassed and confused. I was in my early 20s. My mom was right next to me. But I could not say anything. I knew I could not report it anyway because what proof did I have? Maybe there were CCTVs, but would it worth my time and energy? So I stayed silent. #MosqueMeToo

Why tweet about it now? Perhaps because other women have finally said their experience. I, too, choose to voice my experience. There's strength in numbers. Perhaps as @monaeltahawy said, "I was 15 and ashamed, now I'm 50 and shameless." I'm older now & shameless πŸ˜€ #MosqueMeToo

I've never experienced physical or verbal sexual harassment in mosques in Indonesia, my home country. I assume these mosques are still safe spaces around here. Hopefully it's true. #MosqueMeToo

What about harassment in other places in Indonesia? Personally, fortunately, I've never experienced physical sexual harassment here. Unfortunately, verbal harassment is quite a regular thing, in the form of catcalls.

The only other unfortunate physical sexual harassment I encountered was in a train from Sarajevo to Zagreb. An old man, who told me he's a Bosniak, asked about the book I read and then suddenly grabbed my crotch. I moved to another train cabin afterwards.

@bungamanggiasih Hai mba. Terima kasih sebelumnya. ☺

@bungamanggiasih Ya Allah.. udah ditemeni ortu padahal ya. Harus ekstra hati2 emang ya. Pantesan, ada himbauan dr mutowif waktu pas ke sana, jamaah laki-laki melindungi yg perempuan, bikin semacam pagar, melingkari jamaah perempuan. Thanks for sharing mba..

@bungamanggiasih So sorry to hear this mbak, semoga ke depannya kejadian seperti ini gak terulang lagi sama mbak dan perempuan2 lainnya.
