1. I was 10yrs old on Dec 9, 1980. My clock radio, tuned to Imus In the Morning, woke me for school at 7AM, the sky still dark. #JohnLennon

2. John Lennon was murdered last night, he said. I rushed to find my mom. Did "murdered" mean something other than what I thought it meant?
(((Light & Joy))) @leenie909
3. She assured me I had the correct definition of "murdered" and that yes, I was awake. At 10, I already knew enough to be crushed.

4. I'd learned about the Beatles @ age 8. My cool older cousin had the White Album portraits up on her wall and had explained who they were.
(((Light & Joy))) @leenie909
5. I put it together myself that ALL those songs I already knew were the Beatles. The Wings guy was a Beatle. And the guy who sang Imagine.

6. So by that horrible day, I knew how sad it all was. What was not clear to me until later that day was that this murder was cataclysmic.
(((Light & Joy))) @leenie909
7. I watched the news coverage that night and was stunned at the scope of grief I witnessed. Somehow I realized that this was enormous.
(((Light & Joy))) @leenie909
8. And I needed to understand why. Thus began a lifelong...obsession? Maybe...with everything Beatles. Music, history, culture, politics.
(((Light & Joy))) @leenie909
9. It is inestimable the amount which John Lennon's life, words, music, worldviews shaped who I am over the years.
(((Light & Joy))) @leenie909
10. He was no saint. Sometimes I've hated him. But his influence on just about everything I grew to be...I simply can't measure it.
(((Light & Joy))) @leenie909
11. Some Dec 8s pass without my realizing it. This year, it's hitting me hard. IDK why...but there it is.
(((Light & Joy))) @leenie909
12. So today, I cry yet again for someone whom I never met--weird though I've been informed that is--and thank John Lennon, wherever he is.
