Let's talk about journal club

The 15th meeting of the astronomy twitter journal club was spent discussing journal club itself: what works, what doesn't and how we can make it better

Hi everyone & welcome to the 15th meeting of #astrojc. Today's topic: #astrojc! What works, what doesn't, what can be improved
astrojournalclub @astronomyjc
We've been going for a few months now so seemed like a good time to sit back, look around & see if everything's still working! #astrojc
astrojournalclub @astronomyjc
@kashfarooq Hmm, maybe the deafening silence is trying to tell us something... #astrojc
Kash Farooq @kashfarooq
@astronomyjc Wonder if going from BST to GMT has made a difference. Before it was in some US people's lunch hour. #astrojc
astrojournalclub @astronomyjc
Right, if there is anyone out there besides @kashfarooq, do you think journal club is something we should continue? #astrojc
Awesome_Ph @Awesome_Ph
Hi, sorry I am a little late! Regarding daylight savongs: that made a difference one week, we're on the same time difference again! #astroJC
astrojournalclub @astronomyjc
@MarcelAstroph Hello! Do you think we should continue journal club? #astrojc
Awesome_Ph @Awesome_Ph
I do enjoy the journal clubs, but just 2 or 3 times more people would make it a lot better I think.... #astroJC

@astronomyjc #astrojc Hello, late to the party. Yes I think it works & is worth continuing. Is it advertised outside Twitter?
astrojournalclub @astronomyjc
@StephenSerjeant I don't think so. Do you mean something like facebook or google+, or word of mouth? #astrojc
Kash Farooq @kashfarooq
@_atjc From a layperson's perspective (I'm studying astrophysics with OU), only the controversial and/or big topics seem lively. #astrojc
Awesome_Ph @Awesome_Ph
It does appear on my facebook page, but there are more facebook pages to think of, like the 'Astronomers' group #astroJC
astrojournalclub @astronomyjc
How do you all think we could encourage more participation? Should we stick to more general topics... #astrojc
astrojournalclub @astronomyjc
...maybe using a paper as a basis for a broader discussion? #astrojc
astrojournalclub @astronomyjc
@kashfarooq I think that's because people feel they don't need a lot of background knowledge / to read the paper to participate #astrojc
Kash Farooq @kashfarooq
@astronomyjc The popular ones have been (as far as I can remember): Dark Matter detection, JWST, #FTLNeutrinos, ScienceIsVital #astrojc
Stephen Serjeant is working to contract @StephenSerjeant
@astronomyjc Yes. Could write up something on it for a conference then you'd have a reason to post it on the arXiv..? :) #astrojc
Awesome_Ph @Awesome_Ph
Did you guys get my last post? It appears on my twitter feed but not in the tweetchat... #astroJC
Kash Farooq @kashfarooq
@_atjc Also, astrophysics seems to lots of deeply specialised areas. When we pick a specialised paper from one area: low turnout. #astrojc
