The Way We Win: Traditional Voting

This is my rant on voting from 11/8/11. If we really want to change things, we'll encourage people to vote. Do that, and the RW loses.

I'm told "traditional voting" no longer works. How do we know, unless we try?

Back when 60-65% voted in presidential years, and 48-50% did so in off-years, good people usually won a majority.

When turnout was higher, we got Medicare, civil rights, affirmative action and the EPA. With lower turnout, we get 30 years of neocons.

Seems to me, looking at actual statistics, the solution to most problems these days is to increase turnout.

The GOP doesn't keep winning because they have great ideas and message. They win because they have a negative message that make people sick

Given that the GOP's main strategy is to piss people off and depress turnout, shouldn't our strategy be to give them hope, increase turnout?

Milt Shook @miltshook

The GOP WANTS low turnout, cuz they know their rabid followers will vote for them no matter what. Low turnout give GOP victory by default.

Therefore, the left should be the opposite of the right wing, not just like them.

08/11/2011 22:45:52 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

We should be hopeful, make people want to vote. Do that, and we win. For a change.

08/11/2011 22:46:17 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

And there is reason for hope. There are a lot of good people running for office. Not all of them are hard core libs. So what?

08/11/2011 22:47:08 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

If you want everyone to think progressive thoughts, you need to sell them on progressive ideas. it doesn't "just happen."

08/11/2011 22:47:47 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

Getting people "pissed off" is only a start. W/out viable strategy for winning elections, all the nicest thoughts in the world are wasted.

Wanna change the campaign finance system? You need laws, which means, you need to win elections.

Want to change the voting system, stop the disenfranchisement? You need to win state elections, change the law.

Want to break up banks that are too big? You need to change the law, which means you have to win elections.

Milt Shook @miltshook

Things don't just happen because we want them to. Even civil rights for blacks needed legislation to happen (on paper).

Medicare didn't become what it is on the first bill; it took constant changes and revisions, which meant laws had to be pass, elections won.

If u want a health care system with a "public option," then realize; when you replace Blue Dogs with baggers, you lessen the chance of that

08/11/2011 22:54:04 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

The key to a democratic system is the elections. If you want to know why our votes aren't working, it's because votes don't work alone.

08/11/2011 22:54:47 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

For voting to work, you must gather them together into a bloc. Blocs require compromise. if you can't compromise, you're not into politics

08/11/2011 22:55:46 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

When I hear garbage like "traditional voting doesn't work," i feel like I'm being dragged into a fantasy world.

08/11/2011 22:56:34 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

The reason idiots keep being elected is because of a LACK of votes. It's because of the numbers of people who stay home.

08/11/2011 22:57:14 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

And they stay home, because WE'RE NOT GIVING THEM A REASON TO SHOW UP. They show up for hope. They show up when it makes them feel good.

08/11/2011 22:58:12 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

Most ppl won't show up at the polls cuz they're pissed off, because they don't get pissed off at politics. They get discouraged by politics.

08/11/2011 22:59:03 WIB
Milt Shook @miltshook

Think about it. if one sides screaming, and another side joins in, who do rational ppl listen to? NEITHER OF THEM. They go watch a movie.
