A fairly civil chat with Dan Choi

I talk with former Army lieutenant Dan Choi about the need for strategic thinking in the struggle for LGBT equality.

@ltdanchoi
.@RickArtz50 no party politics should decide our civil rights unless morality is governed by popular vote. What you posit is immoral.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
Delusional @LtDanChoi doesn't think party politics shld determine civil rights. Guess what, Dan - when one party is against them, THEY DO.
@ltdanchoi
@iboudreau too bad when one party has supermajorities they still don't push for them until the other threatens their power.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
.@ltdanchoi The "supermajorities" were illusory thanks to Democratic holdouts and Blue Dogs in congress. Educate yourself, Dan.
@ltdanchoi
.@iboudreau You can be my professor: so should we donate to DCCC if they funnel money to anti-gay pols like Skelton (D-MO)?
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi Donate to the individual campaigns of pro-gay rights representatives. DCCC is thinking in terms of holding/taking majorities.
@ltdanchoi
.@iboudreau I agree. Further, we need to bring more Republicans on our side, and punish the Democrats who vote against us.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi And try this: Make a list of pro-gay rights Republicans, and one for Democrats, and tell me which one is longer. I'll wait.
@ltdanchoi
@iboudreau that's an old trick. It doesn't solve the problem though. It's not the length but how you use it, lol.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi It's far easier to win over state-level Republicans in liberal leaning states like New York. Try the same trick in Texas.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi Republican constituencies make that the much harder job - I'd argue impossible, in most cases.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi When it comes to passing actual legislation, the, uh, length of the list really DOES matter. That's just how it works.
@ltdanchoi
@iboudreau just because it's difficult does not mean we should not try.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi I mean difficult in the way that knocking down a brick wall by hitting your head against it is difficult.
@ltdanchoi
@iboudreau you must confuse me for a vote counter. There is need for that, but legislation is only one vehicle for social justice.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi Well, the other would be changing the attitudes people in general have. And that's really happening, which is great.
@ltdanchoi
@iboudreau of course it is! standing up and confronting anyone who opposes: thats the first step towards achieving basic dignity.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi I'm supportive of the cause. But I urge you to think strategically about it when it comes to the politics of real change.
Ian Boudreau @iboudreau
@ltdanchoi Otherwise we risk losing the very real gains that have been made over the last year+.
