When Should Black Feminists Ignore Their Detractors

When Joan Morgan wonders why she hesitated to respond to a Black woman who attacked Black feminists with the same gusto she did the psuedo-science of Satoshi Kanawaza, she sparks a discussion with Jamilah Lemieux, Regina N. Bradley and myself.
BLACK women feminism

Joan Morgan @milfinainteasy
I read the stupidest blog yesterday written by a black woman on why black feminism was ruining black women's chances for relationships...
Joan Morgan @milfinainteasy
Not all feminism is bad. The good kind focuses on equal rights but the bad feminism (black feminism) has black women single and unhappy...
Joan Morgan @milfinainteasy
Ish was dumb and infuriating but it does have me wondering about why I had no problems responding w a feminist body slam to Kanazawa's...
Joan Morgan @milfinainteasy
Obvious racism and not this ridiculous erroneous blog which actually speaks directly to the pop. I care most about - young black women.
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy I hear you. One thing that makes me pause to respond is the fear of giving people like that credibility with my attention.
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy I used to believe that I HAD to respond to, be on panels with and otherwise engage, telling myself that we had+
Regina N. Bradley, Ph.D. @redclayscholar
@milfinainteasy Gwen Pough posted it on her FB wall and I was scared to read it because I'm working on seizing my inner she-hulk....smh
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy the same audience so it was necessary for me to do so. A mentor made me rethink this when she told me how she readily pulls
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy out of panels if she learns that certain people are on it because her presence would give opportunists legitimacy.
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
That really got me think more deeply about using my time, energy and visibility more strategically. How canI reach that same audience+
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy without dignifying and amplifying certain folks by stepping on their turf. Especially when the rules of engagement have+
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy already been set and in a manner to heavily tilt the discourse in their favor. It's not discourse. It's propraganda.
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy as such, who does it really speak to? Most likely those who have already drank the Kool Aid.
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy In blunt terms, why lend that errant chick YOUR hard-earned platform to rally HER base?
Joan Morgan @milfinainteasy
@redclayscholar me too. But the question is would we hold black on someone else espousing the same nonsense who wasn't black and female?
Regina N. Bradley, Ph.D. @redclayscholar
@milfinainteasy nice word play there....battle lines are drawn in the sand...they shift to whatever's convenient, I suppose
Joan Morgan @milfinainteasy
@sofiaquintero point well taken but I also feel like that's the population we fight for no? Young women who are struggling with the term?
jamilah lemieux @JamilahLemieux
@milfinainteasy @sofiaquintero I'm appreciating your thoughts, ladies. I take issues w most of this particular girl's articles
jamilah lemieux @JamilahLemieux
@milfinainteasy @sofiaquintero and once had a rebuttal posted to her on that same site. I think that b/c she and I are (seemingly) close in
Joan Morgan @milfinainteasy
I also feel like in some ways black feminism concedes valuable ground to idiots like Steve Harvey when we font address relationships.
jamilah lemieux @JamilahLemieux
@milfinainteasy @sofiaquintero age,I feel okay w responding b/c I think we still need much more feminist discourse to motivate my generation
Sofia Quintero @sofiaquintero
@milfinainteasy I hear you, sis! I'm thinking we have to reach them on our terms, proactively, through our own work, on the ground+
jamilah lemieux @JamilahLemieux
@milfinainteasy @sofiaquintero Most BW across race lines haven't truly considered feminism and I'm not ok w her (cont) http://tl.gd/b65c6i
Regina N. Bradley, Ph.D. @redclayscholar
@sistertoldja @milfinainteasy @sofiaquintero That and continuously refreshed idea of what feminist thought entails..I've read some places...

The discussion continues with concerns for strategy, accountability and historical accuracy. And fashion, of course.
