The 967th Day Out of Work

Today's truncated musings about being out of work, and the job market that doesn't seem interested in helping change that.

At some point, a job search should yield...you know...a job. Approaching 1,000 days in about a month.

I really should consider taking my talents to another border. Clearly, no one wants them here.

Can't land one damn W-2, but get countless offers to sign up for this college and that sweepstakes. Just give me $100k. I'll go from there.

I said back in Winter that I might never work again. It's almost Summer. Nothing's changed.

You have to have 3 things in society in order to succeed; credit, the ability to get credit, and a car. I don't have any of these.

Creditors call my phone, wanting to settle accounts; I can't do anything for them.

24/05/2011 20:07:51 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

And much of time, I feel like I'm repeating the same futile process.

24/05/2011 20:08:55 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

And I'm tired of these multi-level, get rich quick things; I can't invest money I don't have for something that doesn't have guarantees.

vcthree @vcthree

It irritates me that I know what I can do, but no one wants to let me do it. Because of some crap beyond my control.

Multi-level sales: it's for some people, but not me. I dislike the ambiguity of the process.

24/05/2011 20:24:10 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

And it's all the same: same office setups, same people, same pay structure, same fresh-meat recruiting process. I don't like it.

Yet these are the only people I've interviewed with in over 2 years. Temp agencies don't call.

24/05/2011 20:26:22 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

I applied for a position with a Temp agency in February. Interviewed, passed computer assessment with a perfect score...

24/05/2011 20:27:23 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

...but didn't get the job I went in there for. And I called back in March, and they were hemming and hawing.

24/05/2011 20:28:10 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

They basically will regard me last for any job, because...surprise...I don't own (and can't legally drive) a car.

24/05/2011 20:29:32 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

So, that puts me at 1,001 of a 1,000 candidates, DESPITE passing assessments with near-perfect aplomb.

24/05/2011 20:30:15 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

And now I've gone and put myself in for more debt, just to get more education for a career I'm not certain is a guarantee anymore.

24/05/2011 20:37:22 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

Then I hear that companies are reluctant to hire these kinds of students, and I'm thinking, "What the hell do you want from me?"

24/05/2011 20:38:32 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

"You want me to have this education, but you also want me to be able to work on-call? But if I don't have the education, I can't work?"

24/05/2011 20:39:25 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

Then society looks at you like a pariah because you don't work; the perception becomes you're unmotivated, lazy, and dependent.

24/05/2011 20:40:50 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

That effects relationships with family and potential S.O.'s, and I gotta tell you, it really sucks.

24/05/2011 20:41:54 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

This is why I say, often, that I'd rather just have $100k. At least then I could erase debts and invest in capital.

24/05/2011 20:47:04 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

@cbergdc I can erase all debts with about $60k. That's student loans, an insurance judgment, and other small bills.

24/05/2011 20:49:12 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

At a minimum, I'd just like to get the ability to drive back; that way, I can apply for a taxi job or something.

24/05/2011 20:48:19 WIB
vcthree @vcthree

But I'm also a realist; nobody's just going to give me $100k. And the lottery is fool's gold. So I gotta work, or else die.
