In which I learn from @myownpetard & @JKelton1 on 1967 borders

My friends @myownpetard and @JKelton1 help me better understand the context of the outrage from Israel and many U.S. Republicans at President Obama's call for a peace agreement based on "1967 borders".

In other words, the "1967 borders" statement WAS a big deal, bc RWNJs (& Netanyahu) no longer accept that framework http://bit.ly/laRFB0
Laura @muhajabah
In a context where reiterating current policy gets you vilified, doing so may be a bold act. It doesn't exist in a vacuum #thinkaboutit
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@muhajabah they never actually accepted going back to the 1967 borders in the first place
Laura @muhajabah
@myownpetard right, but my understanding is that has been the U.S. position for a long time & people never fre… (cont) http://deck.ly/~btxhU
Laura @muhajabah
@myownpetard because if this hasn't been our policy then it WAS a big deal that Obama stated it, which ppl are claiming it wasn't. Confused.
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@muhajabah it has been the US position for a long time, but people do totally freak out when it's stated.
Laura @muhajabah
@myownpetard OK, I haven't completely lost my mind, then. Thanks for explaining!
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@muhajabah they *shouldn't* be surprised. but then, people do like to ascribe their own opinions to POTUS. i'm not suprised by the venom.
Laura @muhajabah
@myownpetard Ha! That's true. I'll leave my tweets up, then, but RT'd you for clarification.
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@muhajabah it's chaos. it's built on fear and confusion and mistrust on both sides. i don't KNOW that the 1967 borders would solve it...
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@muhajabah but i don't know that it WOULDN'T solve it either. but wait until someone mentions what to do with Jerusalem... global freakout.
Laura @muhajabah
@myownpetard I'm wondering if it's significant that Israel & RW are rejecting the framework this openly, if it changes the dynamic
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@muhajabah it would change the dynamic if they DIDN'T freak out about it
Laura @muhajabah
@myownpetard ha, good point! My sense was always they rejected it but would give a degree of lip service the… (cont) http://deck.ly/~Bs8Mk
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@muhajabah there's a ways to go before this is resolved. sigh.
@JKelton1
@muhajabah @myownpetard @me As rapturistchristians gained ground, the borders became an issue. This Christian says pffffft to that.
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@JKelton1 @muhajabah the rapturey christians have always had israel's back about this stuff. it's a strange relationship.
Laura @muhajabah
@myownpetard @JKelton1 that whole thing weirded me out when I looked into it once, don't think I'd want those ppl to have my back
(((myownpetard))) @myownpetard
@muhajabah @JKelton1 it's super weird. they support israel because when all the jews go back to israel jesus will come back. o_0
@JKelton1
@myownpetard @muhajabah Very weird. then 3rd temple gets built and boom. This Christian finds it all very odd... & rather unseemly.
Mark Knoller @markknoller
In the past, US presidents - including Bill Clinton - called for Israeli-Palestinians peace talks based on UN Resollutions 242 & 338.
Mark Knoller @markknoller
UNRes 242 calls for a return to 1967 borders. But borders were seen as final status issue to be negotiated as one of the last issues.
