@monaeltahawy, @blogdiva, et al on the #Niqab

A compilation of the debate surrounding France's controversial "burka ban." I've focused on Tweets from @monaeltahawy (pro-ban) and @blogdiva (anti-ban) while also including many side conversations in the debate. Please feel free to edit for completeness and accuracy. Liberté? Egalité? Fraternité? The French Burka ban is a betrayal of the values the country was founded on http://bit.ly/dYAdMQ

My position on #France niqab ban: I detest Sarkozy and I support banning niqab/face veils everywhere. Here's why: http://t.co/q4AyWUX

The French "Burqa Ban": To ban or not to ban - discuss!
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
Muslims do not agree on niqab ban. Impt to remember we're not monolithic & we don't hve to agree. On media, I prefer debating issue w/women
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
Enjoyed arguing niqab bans w Elliot Spitzer & Heba Ahmed, 1 of few niqabis who agrees to go on media. She made good points till last one.
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
Heba Ahmed's last point about wearing niqab so that she's not sexualised is another issue of niqab easily overlooked. Where's onus on men?
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
Elliot Spitzer mentioned religious accomodation & 1st amendment. But polygamy - in Quran - banned in US. Niqab - not in Quran - not banned.
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
I'm not saying that bans on polygamy are anti-Muslim. I'm saying they render religious accomodation argument for niqab irrelevant.
Dawud Walid @DawudWalid
@monaeltahawy niqab & polygamy r apples & oranges. polygamy has many legal implications unlike niqab.
Dawud Walid @DawudWalid
@monaeltahawy actually, if gay unions r legal in some states, polygamy should be as well though I'm not a proponent of it.
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
@DawudWalid I'm addressing the point that all religious rights are allowed under 1st amendment.
(((Katha Pollitt))) @KathaPollitt
@monaeltahawy Are niqab'd and hijab'd women not raped, groped, harrassed? Heba is living in a fantasy world where "modesty" protects.
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
@KathaPollitt Exactly. Instead of putting onus on men, women are disappearing/being erased to "protect" them.
Dawud Walid @DawudWalid
@monaeltahawy polygamy has judicial implications unlike niqab so it's not really analogous from 1st Amendment perspective.
Dawud Walid @DawudWalid
polygamy not wajib. niqab believed wajib but some. Those who wear niqab have stronger right under 1st amendment.
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
It's not easy or "popular" 2 argue 4 niqab ban everywhere but getting easier 2 hear more views & 2 hear from more Muslims pro ban.
Dawud Walid @DawudWalid
I think racism among Muslims in America is a better topic to discuss than a niqab ban all the way in France. Khalas on niqab talk for me.
(((Katha Pollitt))) @KathaPollitt
@monaeltahawy if it was really about protection, women would disguise themselves as men! I oppose ban btw, it just seems xenophobic.
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
That brother/sister in Florida insists I tell media I speak for myself not for Muslims/Islam. Never claimed otherwise.
Mona Eltahawy @monaeltahawy
Means a lot to me, Wissam! U know how much I support you and salute ur courage RT @wissamtarif: You speak for lot of us Mona.
